Updates

Update Thu, 11 Jan 2018: We are continuing to make progress on patching for these bugs. The essential host side updates have been completed as below.  So we will be closing this notice for now. Please open a support ticket if you have any further questions.

Update at 11 Jan 0700 UTC: The majority of Dallas host updates are running now.

Update at 10 Jan 0700 UTC: remainder of hosts have been scheduled (group 6).

Update at 9 Jan 0118 UTC: Some host updates have been scheduled (group 5).  You can view the schedule for your servers at:
https://rimuhosting.com/cp/hsupgrades.jsp

Some updates have not been scheduled yet.  We will schedule these remaining hosts when certain further software updates are in place.  Please subscribe to this notice to receive notification when schedules are set for these hosts.

Update at 7 Jan 0716 UTC: customers on dedicated servers can schedule or initiate their updates at https://rimuhosting.com/cp/vps/hsupgrade.jsp

If your dedicated host server has not had an update time scheduled, please hold off on running an update.  If the update time was not scheduled, and you run an update, that is fine, but you may need to run a further update at a later point in time.  We are working on adding some extra features to our Xen setup that certain hosts will need.  And those features have not yet been developed or released, but we are expecting them in the next few days.

Update at 7 Jan 0807 UTC: emailing customers re group 4 round.  Due to start from Jan 7 2300 UTC.  Update at Jan 9 0108: some of these have been completed.  The remainder are part of the scheduled group 5 updates.

Update at 7 Jan 0200 UTC: emailing customers re group 3 round.  Due to start from Jan 7 2000 UTC.  Update at UTC Jan 8 0144 some hosts completed.  Remaining hosts queued pending some fix work to our updates.  Update at Jan 9 0108: These are all complete.

Update at 7 Jan 0200 UTC: emailing customers re group 2 round.  Due to start shortly.  Update at 0718: group 2 has completed.

Update at 6 Jan 0306 UTC: we will be running the first round of updates shortly to a selected group of hosts ('group 1').  We will be emailing those customers direction.  Update at 7 Jan 0202: group 1 is complete.

Issue Status

There is an issue affecting Intel CPUs.  This article provides a good overview https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/04/intel_amd_arm_cpu_vulnerability/

For customers on bare metal dedicated servers we recommend installing a kernel with the page table isolation patches.

For customers on virtual machines we are awaiting patches for the virtualization software we use per https://xenbits.xen.org/xsa/advisory-254.html For VM customers we have provided the 4.14 kernel with the page table isolation patches on our kernel change page.

The situation is changing on a day-to-day basis.  It is a critical issue.  And there are various patches and security updates being developed to address the problem.  We are closely monitoring the situation and will be doing all we can to ensure the security of our customers.
